| During
the 1990's Times Square's renovation created an explosion
of family friendly entertainment, restaurants and attractions.
Amidst the hustle and bustle, families can now be found
exploring the sights, sounds and entertainment options
the Square has to offer.
One of the most popular destinations for people of any age is Madame Tussaud's
Wax Museum on 42nd Street between 7th and 8th Avenues. A host of famous and
infamous people are represented at this world-renowned wax museum, with new
figures added regularly. Outside you can pose with whichever movie star has
a film opening that weekend or with politicians in the news. Best of all, as
the energetic staff outside the museum cry to passersby, the lobby is free.
Also along this block of 42nd Street
are Disney's flagship store and the Lion King musical. Forty
Second Street hosts several ways to spend your day, such
as the Broadway City Arcade across the street from the Disney
Store, with over 200 high-tech arcade games. Next door there's
the Creamstone Creamery, a favorite for ice-cream lovers
of all ages. Or you can go to 43rd and 8th Avenue for the
Ben and Jerry's scoop shop.
Across 42nd Street on Broadway is ESPN
Zone, a diverting smorgasbord of play for kids of all ages.
Some of the most popular games are golf and boxing, or you
can join the race at the Daytona Special. Also, on Monday
afternoons you can be part of the audience for the taping
of Sports Reporters Primetime.
On 44th Street and Broadway, Toys 'R Us claims the prize for largest store
in Times Square. Inside you can ride the 60 foot ferris wheel, gape at a life
size, moving T-Rex and satisfy your sweet tooth at the candy store. One block
up is Planet Hollywood on 45th and Broadway, a great place for kids to see
memorabilia from their favorite movies while stopping for a snack.
There's also a plethora of one-of–a-kind
stores for kids and parents to marvel at. At 48th and Broadway
is Popcorn, Indiana, an entire store devoted to that gourmet
staple -- popcorn. With Chocolate Chunk 'n Caramel and Country
Cheddar among numerous other options, you can't go wrong.
While you're walking around Times Square keep on the lookout for street performers.
There's often well known characters posing for pictures, like the Giant Hershey
bar at the Hershey store on 48th and Broadway, or Spider-Man, as well as mimes,
personalities and the occasional eccentric. Older children may enjoy seeing
where Total Request Live is filmed -- the studio above the MTV store at Broadway
and 45th Streets.
A fun way for everyone to end their day is stopping by Mars
2112 on Broadway and 51st. Mars 2112 is a themed restaurant
where you ride a spaceship to your table and indulge in way-out "Martian" concoctions |
